It never came out that the two defendants were in the home for boys and abused etc, but basically they cross examined the witnesses that left doubt ion the juries mind, undermined Knowles' (Kevin Bacons) charecter and then produced a witness, the priest (Robert DeNiro) who said the two accused were with him on the night / time of the murder. The two accused got off.
Another part of it was the guard who killed the coloured boy (Russo) after the football game was murdered by Russos' brother - and the other guard who was called as a charecter witness, and who also helped Knowles abuse the boys, admitted to the abuse and was arrested. They got revenge all round really.
At the end they had a party and basically it was the last time they were all together as they went onto different things. (two of them - the accused - died).
I hope this makes sense! It is a very good film - sad at the end!
In the original book, the author says that the Brad Pitt character moved from the USA to the south of England. But the 2 defendants both died under sad circumstances.Sorry can't be more specific, but it's years since I read it.......get it. It's a great book, that gives you much more background than the film could
