New York - Hostel or Cheap Hotel

I am thinking of going to NYC in the new year, but dont want to spend loads on the accommodation. Does anyone have any recommendations for good (but cheap) hotels or hostels. Although i would prefer to be in a central location, i dont mind a small amount of travel from the hotel/hostel.

When I stayed in New York, the cheapest hotel I found on Manhatten was called the Gershwin Hotel on 28th and 5th. About $100 for a double room.
