I'm no expert, but I have helped my dad put troughings up when he was still working.
We're gonna need more info so we can give you more accurate information, like:
What sort of troughings are you replacing (plastic, wood, etc)??
What is the total length of troughings??
How high/awkward are the troughings??

Going off what my dad used to charge, I'd say £1400 is VERY excessive, but we need more info first .....
Must be some serious guttering for £1400, racoon. What did the quote include?
Sounds way over the top.....you really should get at least two more quotes.

Thanks all for very helpful replies. The quote featured no information at all! I know nothing about the technical side, but it's good to know the price is too high and I am going to tell the roofer not to bother. The website sent by Gizmonster is vey useful, much appreciated.
......... just had a look at Giz's link. Very good guide, and realistic prices.
