I think Sandy that the concept of the bank holiday is being eroded, Originally banks closed so the business community had to close for the day. High street branches may well open but "banking" is still closed.
It is an official Public Holiday, whether Banks are open or not. When I worked for BT, we had double time for working on a Sunday, but two and half times normal pay, for giving up our BH's.
cazza...you have my sympathies then. Employment law has gone backwards it would seem.
When I was a boy in the late 50's, my Dad came home one day and announced that he was only going to work a half day on Saturdays from that day on. This was a major improvement in his working conditions, as it meant that he could take me to see Spurs play in the afternoon, something he hadn't been able to do before.
We should be extremely wary of losing our employment rights. They were hard fought for.
In Scotland, kids were off school last Friday for Victoria Day and off today for the bank holiday. Banks ARE closed, but business as usual for everything/everybody else.
I don't get extra pay for bank holidays, we are only shut for 4 over the year.
Angus school kids had the day off, Aberdeenshire didn't, I live just on the border of them, 2 grandkids had to go to school, their cousin didn't.
