To fly with Ryanair from Bournemouth to Prestwick, for example, you must show pictorial evidence of who you are. This means that - if you do not have a photo-style Driving Licence (and many people don't) - they insist on seeing your passport. Only these two documents are acceptable to Ryanair.
As Meadowgrover suggests, you'd be well advised to have your passport with you, but you could check with the individual carrier before leaving home whether it is necessary.
