Does No Landline = No Internet?

I'm certainly a non-techy as you'll guess, but is it possible to do without a landline and still have internet access? If there is an alternative, it should be accessible through something other than a tiny screen, not unduly costly, not unduly slow.
I'm a low-end user, surfing the news, purchasing through the popular shopping sites etc. I don't watch films or download videos/music. I live in an area that has reasonable mobile coverage.
I resent paying a fortune for line rental (again as you've probably guessed)!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes, mobile broadband dongle. I have one with O2. I get 4g, 5gb of data for £30 which is valid for three months.

Mine is PAYG but you can also get monthly contracts. Good broadband dongles for more info.

I think you'll find that all the providers ( apart from virgin ) requires you to have a landline in order to get internet

You can get the internet via your mobile phone service provider's data service by tethering your mobile to your PC.

Or you can go use free WiFi at the coffee shops if you are using a portable computer. (Or your neighbour's WiFi if they haven't secured it and you have no conscience.)

I believe there is a satellite option available but I know of no one who has tried it.

So much easier to pay the cost of the landline.

Even Virgin must connect a cable to your residence which you pay a regular fee for: so you have a landline, you are simply not given/paying for a fixed line telephone service on it.

We don't have a landline in my village so I have something from Deutsche Telekom called a Speedport Router, which works by satellite in a similar way to your mobile phone, and is fast and no problem, I rent it and it goes on the monthly phone bill. Is there not something similar in the UK?


OG. I smile when people talk about "free WIFI in coffee shops" it's free but you are of course expected to buy at least a cup of coffee, minimum usually 2 quid. Last time in England with a lot of business to do and a laptop I spent a fortune on coffee having to go in three or four times a day, in the end I was suffering from caffeine over-dosing.

I am on a dongle with Connect3; costs £16.54 per month (on a rolling monthly contract signed for 2 years) giving me 15.365 MB per month - which is more than ample.

I have used a dongle for 6 years with no problems. For £15 per month I was getting 2gb of 3g which was more than ample for my needs.

When next in UK go to WETHERSPOONS where there is Wi/Fi plus cheaper coffee than Starbucks and alcohol poisoning is an option as well. :-)

Internet comes in two ways, from a cable connected to your home or a mobile signal (3G or 4G).

You may still have a cable connected to your home even if you do not use it for a telephone service. If you use it for the internet, you will have to pay a charge for the landline.

You can tether your computer (or laptop or tablet) to a mobile signal. The downside is that data download charges are usually very steep.

retro; I'll bear that in mind :0) Another option I learnt from watching "The Romanians are Coming" is you can go to Victoria coach station (or any other I guess) and stand by coaches which have WIFI. There is though the risk that the coach may depart leaving you abandoned mid-message! but then again, there's always 'another one behind'.

We have no landline in this part of Menorca and i find that this company and the broadband service is excellent.

Bit expensive.

You can use mobile internet, but it is too expensive, it's not affordable at all. You will have to pay a lot of money just to get a few GB of data. None of my friends uses mobile internet.
