My darling Fred, 3, has chronic kidney failure. The vet said he's never seen such blood results in such a young cat.

Fred won't eat any cat food, not even the Royal Canin Renal food that the vet prescribed. All he will eat is bits of chicken and ham. He's drinking loads.

He was 5.4kg, he was a big boy, not fat, just large. He went down to 4.8kg, then 4.7kg, now he's gone up to 5.1kg. The vet thinks this may be due to fluid retention.

Today's visit to the vet revealed he also has a galloping heartbeat. He's lethargic, his breath smells terrible and he has no interest in anything.

He's such a character, he always used to insist on giving me a kiss through the banisters on the stairs every time I went up or down them. He greeted me with a nose kiss in the morning and when I came home.

I don't really know why I'm posting this. An appointments due for tomorrow to put him to sleep. I'm truly heartbroken. I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm doing the right thing?

Thank you all. Your kind words really are a comfort to me.

Fred went to sleep just after 11 this morning, it was very peaceful and he poked his little tongue out so he looked beautifully cute ❤️

I am heartbroken and weeping but I know my Fredster is in a better place now, where he can run and eat and be free from pain.

We are having him cremated on his own and are getting his ashes put in a tribute box that has space for a photo on the lid. Me and my daughter both got a gorgeous tuft of his beautiful white and tiger-stripe fur.

Good night, my beautiful Freddypops, I love you ❤️ Xxx
For such a small animal cats make a huge impact on our lives.

:-) He had C-attitude
Aww Halifaxmum, I've got tears in my eyes now imagining him with his little tongue sticking out. Believe me, I do know how you are feeling now and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. RIP little Fred x
Was thinking about you today. So sorry.
Only three years old, the poor poor boy. So sorry that's an awful thing to happen for both of you. But thank you for giving him three wonderful years full of love; so many animals don't get any. Bless you.
Really really sorry, h-mum - we know how you feel. We were lucky with our Rover - he had CKD but it was well controlled with medication - but he was about 14 before he was diagnosed. Huge and gentle hugs to you tonight - we lost Rover before Christmas, and I still weep for him. You have done entirely the right thing, it's the best and finest gift that you could have done for him. xxxxx
Thinking of you today, it's so hard to say goodbye, but like us all, you know you've done the best thing for Fred .....doesn't make it any easier right now, but in time it will.

Big hugs and a purr from Ziggi ...take care xx
