Yes you are probably right. I recall the Malta Defense Force blew up an old obsolete Gozo ferry to form an artificial reef which I thought was a nice gesture. Did you dive on that?

Always remember asking one of my skippers who used to instruct diving on Malta about sharks.That was back in 1980 and I think I had seen Jaws. Ruddy liar. He said the Med was shark free and in my then,naivety,I believed the bludger. I went into a beach bar and saw large mandibles over the door.They belonged to a Great White caught by a local fisherman about 80 years before. Oh well ,You never get to heaven if you don't die first. :-)
