Norwegian Fjords

We are thinking of going on a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords possibly to see the Northern Lights, does anyone know the best time of year we are no to go and do all cruises go from Southampton as I have been looking at from going Liverpool but I can't see anything.

You need to go in winter otherwise it isn't dark enough and make sure you go when the moon is at it smallest to get the best effect.

"fjordland" and "northern lights" don't necessarily co-incide, since most of the fjord cruises don't venture beyond Nordfjord, Sogn Fjord or Hardanger Fjord. Awesome though they all are, they're not really far north enough for the aurorae.

if it's the northern lights you particularly want an opportunity to see (I say that because it's not guaranteed), you need to take the hurtigrute.

winter - and ideally last winter or the one before. They go in 11-year cycles, and they're fading a bit each year at the moment. Don't get your hopes too high, though; you might see them every night or not at all. A friend of mine from the borders went to Iceland to see them and didn't; when she got back she found that they'd been visible the previous night at home so all her friends had seen them and she had not.

Hurtigruten go there all the time, with working coastal ships rather than cruise liners. but several real cruise lines offer Northern Lights trips as well.
