My Canon S200x is hopeless. I have to get a new printer. Can anyone recommend a good one- with not too expensive cartridges - up to about �100?

Epson printers.

And there are some good 3rd-party inks that are much cheaper than Epson's own, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference with. Don't have the link at hand to the ones I'm thinking about though, but will get it.

Hie Scarlett, I ahve an Epson CX3650 all in one which is very good and prints excellent quality. I buy all my cartridges from www.ijtdirect.co.uk they are very good and one third the price of Epson can recommend

If you do a lot of B/W printing consider a Laser printer.

They are much cheaper per page than an ink jet and you can get a laser printer for well under �100 nowadays.

In fact there is some thing to be said for having a laser for b/w AND an ink jet for color.

Over a short space of time the laser will pay for itself due to not needing so much new ink.

I totally agree with vehelpfulguy too btw, hadn't even thought about laser printers.

If you do a mixture of black and white text and colour pictures and graphs and things, you may still be better off with an inkjet. But if you do a lot of black and white printing of text (if you work from home or something perhaps), then laser printers are probably the way to go as said above.

Definitely Epson Stylus Photo R220 - look at it's spec. Can get cheap compatible cartridges. If you want to use memory cards directly, consider the 300 series. NB. They both print on DVDs and CDs if that's any use.
