Driving Restrictions

My wife and I are,or should I say were planning a trip to county clare driving from Dublin airport to Ennis in a hired car.On checking the rental companies I discovered that because of my age 75+ I could not hire such.Is this standard procedure across all rental companies? Thanks

It would probably be best to phone the relevant companies to check. The telephone numbers of all car hire companies at Dublin Airport can be found here:

(You'll need to precede them with '00').

However this 2012 article from the Telegraph suggests that neither Hertz nor Avis have upper age restrictions, so they might be the best places to try:

From the Budget (Ireland) website...

"Customers over 75 years are eligible to rent with the following specific conditions:

They must drive regularly
They must provide us with a letter from their insurance company proving that they hold a current motor insurance policy and that they have been driving without having an accident for the last 5 years.
They must provide us with a letter from their doctor stating that they are in good health.
They may be required to undergo a driving assessment accompanied with a Budget representative."

thanks for your replies.We now think we will use our own car driving newcastle to cairnryan, ferry to larn and drive on to ennis. Long drives I know but at least we have our own transport. We could still fly but again because of age the prices are substantially increased so in a way it is catch 22.However, thank you once again for your help, I'm sure we will sort something out.
