Washing Machine Depth Problem

Hello, we just had a washing machine delivered, but it is sticking out far more than the previous one, despite being only a few centimetres deeper. The fitters (John Lewis) say it cannot be pushed back further because of the pipes. I guess our options are to try to find a 40cm-ish one (these seem rare and are from brands that are not recommended as reliable) or to try to take out one of our built in cupboards and move the washing machine but this means having water pipes going further and past the cooker....
I am a bit despairing about all this - the fitters have also left a massive rip in out lino which they didn't even confess to, and we have a small kitchen and a really tight budget at the moment, and I've already taken two days of annual leave to receive delivery!
Just wondered if anyone had any advice on machines, fittings, etc - or just moral support!

Most white goods are designed to fit the standard 60cm worktop width. Do you have a worktop less than the standard width?

Hello, our worktops are 50cm. As I said, it is a small kitchen. The previous washing machine stuck out a bit, but this one is really not OK!

John Lewis pride themselves on their reputation as a high quality retailer at the top end of the market. I would complain to them that the installers have done a very poor job and damaged the lino in the process. I think they will offer to put it right. The excuse about the pipes seem just that an excuse for poor work.

I found the same thing when I bought a new machine. The new ones are no wider but are deeper. I would certainly be complaining about the damage to the floor covering but I don't think there is much you can do about the machine dimensions. When you say "fitters" did they just connect the machine to the existing plumbing? If this is so then a "proper" plumber might be able to rerun the pipes to save space at the back of the machine but that will cost more.

Thanks, yes, I am starting to think that our best option might be to see if we can return it (and of course to complain about the damage to the floor) and to get a shallow depth washing machine.

If it's any help, I usually have the cold supply, the waste, and the electrical socket all located in a cupboard right next to the machine.

Holes are drilled in the cupboard side (as far as possible to the rear, near the back wall.

Machines can then always be pushed right back to the wall. Of course a 600mm deep machine will then stick out around 80-100mm.
