Many people like to think they are above using the likes of FaceBook, they appear to think it gives them some kind of superiority, most of them have never actually got to using it. Yes of course some post crap, some people talk crap, that's life.

when AB started - and I started with it - there was no 'social media'
There was, though, it just hadn't been named. The internet version was mostly called "chatrooms" though there were also more restricted Q&A sites like AB where you could ask questions of the public at large; that's still social media. The mobile phone version wasn't invented till later, but that's just a new platform rather than a new kind of behaviour.

Absolutely not bednobs - no interactive site is immune from rubbish being posted - and that does include this one.
And I can see that it can be seen as social media, but I prefer to think of it as somewhat superior in terms of its smaller volume of posters, matched by a higher level of content.
Think of it like a Ford Fiesta and a Ferarri - they are both cars ...

I have said it before, and I will say it again - people who start a response with "So ..." are either going to completely miss the point they are responding to, or they are going to reply to something that was not in the original post - the second in this case. That's true - it belongs to the same peculiar mind set that gives some people a false sense of superiority because they don't own a television.
Speaking personally, I don't use social media simply because the concept doesn't appeal to me, and more importantly, I just don't have the time!

It was fifteen years ago - the old memory is not what it was!

Without wishing to indulge in semantics, the maniacal use of mobile devices has reached the level where I believe it has become, for many, a mental illness, and one of epic proportions at that.
Just why any sane person would need to walk along the street with a phone clutched in their hand is very puzzling. When I take one out with me it stays in my pocket and is used simply to say I’ll be late due to pigs on the line at Effingham Junction” or whatever. If there are no pigs it is not used at all.
A day or two ago I was waiting at a bus stop and a young woman was waiting with a child asleep in a pushchair and another aged about five. He was apparently, going to the dentist and he was somewhat apprehensive (so apprehensive he was crying his eyes out and urging his mother to give him some reassurance). She was busy in the Twittersphere. After a few minutes (by which time the boy was inconsolable) she finally turned to him. “What’s the matter now?” He was sobbing and could not answer. I explained to her that he was very worried about his visit to the dentist and had been trying to attract her attention but could not do so as he appeared not to have a phone with him.. “Aw, don’t be silly, babe. Tell you what, let’s see if the dentist’s on Facebook!” The bus came along and I went upstairs.
Mr Zuckenburger (or whatever his name is) has made a fortune from people’s inanity. And good luck to him. Quite whether he should be proud that one seventh of the world’s population was acting inanely at the same time courtesy of his product is open to debate.

I agree with NJ. Mark Zuckerburg must be laughing his socks off. Recently, one of my best friends moved away. I went around to her house to see her off and we were sitting in the kitchen saying our heartfelt goodbyes. Every two minutes there was a 'ding' from her Facebook as different people were commenting on one thing and another. She was interrupting our conversation to look and laugh at what was happening via her phone. I thought "Can`t we even say goodbye without you looking at Facebook. Put the bloody thing away"! And she`s a 40 something woman. At least she has learnt, in the days before social media, to socially interact. There`s not much hope for young people who are brought up with Facebook, Twitter etc.
