I think you are getting confused with the Empire days.

The last I knew New Zealand were still part of the Commonwealth, are they now prepared to sever links with the UK and all the benefits that go with being a member?

Why would severing links with the UK mean they had to leave the Commonwealth AOG? From Commonwealth.org 'The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent and equal sovereign states'. Historically it may have been based on countries formerly ruled by the UK but no longer.

Since the UK abandoned them trade wise when our governments decided to join up with European foreign countries instead can you blame them for dropping the union flag ?

the union flag hasn't gone yet. There will be two referendums on the subject - first to find which of the four is preferred, then another one a couple of years later to decide if they actually want to stick with it instead of the current flag.

They all look a bit rubbish in my opinion, but if I was forced to choose, I prefer the curvy Maori one.

this is just a smoke screen from PM John Key to get the country talking about a subject while he manipulates the country to suit businesses.
Most people here want to keep the union flag and the final referendum next year will prove that.
The four final flags would not however look out of place on a Legoland castle.
