Suddenly today I noticed that despite the ever-present pond they regularly use, there were five of them manically splashing around having a wonderful time in the birdbath. No doubt I need to fill it more often. With visions of them wearing little swimming trunks and 'wing-bands', I’m now thinking of installing a diving board that launches them directly from the feeding table into the bath straight after breakfast.

Many thanks to all for your suggestions. Problem solved. :o)

Didn't your mum tell you never to swim straight after eating, it gives you stomach cramps ;-).
Yes, the little devils much prefer to bathe when there is a gradual water depth, seeming to get more confident and go in deeper as they lose their inhibitions.
wouldn't the installation of a diving board necessitate the employment of a lifeguard? i don't think you've thought it through
I have a mental picture of the perfect swallow dive :)
Hopefully with a little bird feeding table and bath it's not a swan dive chipchopper ;-)
I love it when the sparrows arrive and send one in to test the water. Next thing they're all in and there's no water left. I can have anything up to 30 of them all queuing up.
Yes. My brother scrubs his one out and refills his every morning.
because it is used so much.
