Using UK electricals in the USA

Am off to New York tomorrow and have been told my hairdryer and straighteners won't work over there because of the voltage. Is that right and, if so, how do I tell which things will and won't work?

Rentokill

A large development of flats near me seems to have very regular visits from Rentokill. They're there now and just carried some large rolls of something white in, does anyone know what they're for?

Madonna turns 50 today

I look at her and think, how good she looks for her age although I guess much of it is assisted by money and bloody hard work in the gym and such. I can't help but wonder is it worth all those hours...
