Are catalytic converters necessary?

My Peugeot's catalytic converter is giving bother. Can it be done away with? If so, can the car still pass the MOT (in Northern Ireland)?

Is it a pain?

More an more trailers for programmes seem to be along the lines of dozens of fast shots from the programme within one or two seconds. Does anyone else find this annoying and sore on their eyes?

Name of short story based in Ireland

I once read a short story set in Ireland concerning the life and death of a fisherman and his family. The story had 'chapters' based on the days of the week but each new day was separated by years....
