Browswer connects ok, but nothing else

I can connect fine via broadband for using a browswer (IE) but nothing else will connect (like games), even though the connection light is on. No program works. Is there a setting I need to change?...

I don't wish to do this, but please. Can someone tell me why my broadband cuts off every so often, even in use. I have done all the IE settings changes. Maybe its set up wrongly. Any tips?
