Defragmentation of hard drive

A general question really. I was just about to start a defrag, and my disk defrag page says that it is run every Wednesday at 0100. How is this possible please, since my laptop is not switched on at...

Should I defrag my external drives ? Music , films etc . I chop & change them a lot
