How does one stop a Mac Snow Leopard OSX 10 from making a huge booming sound when you switch it on?

Its meant to be a groovy thing but its just a stupid gimmick really. Even the Geeks on Apple's Community site had no idea and just waffled. Setting the sound on 'mute' does nothing at all, however...

We have a message saying that the hard drive of 65GB is nearly full. We have copied the ITunes file to an external hard drive, but each time we connect the iPhone it all loads back on to the C drive....
