Rhyming slang

What is the point of it? I've always wondered this. Why not call stairs 'stairs' instead of 'apples and pears'. Is it supposed to be in some way clever?

What's the most annoying British accent?

My votes are Liverpudlian way out ahead, followed by sarf east Laahhnndon (I'm from the SE, but am fairly accentless) and then Brummie. My favourite is Geordie.
