What does it mean when a car is described as 54 or 56 etc?

Know nothing about cars so please humour me, looking for a van or minibus to convert into a campervan, what does it mean when it says for eg, such & such year, 56 plate?

CD cleaner disc

Do these actually work? I have a cd mini system which was pretty cheap anyway, but for a while now i've had trouble with it. Some cd's sound juddery when i play them, is it worth trying a cleaner disc...
