burning a downloaded movie

If ive downloaded a movie from the net (legally of course!), what format do i need to convert it to to put it on to a blank dvd? Because ive tried doing it as it is and it doesnt recognize the format...

Im trying to copy a movie from my laptop to a blank dvd, but it doesnt seem to give me the option to copy to dvd on windows media player, only to copy to a cd. My computewr has the facility to copy...

How can i copy a movie i've downloaded on to a regular 700mb cd-r, so i can watch it on my dvd player? I dont have a dvd writer and just need a useful program so i can watch my movies!
