DVD Recorder

If I was to buy a DVD recorder (no hard drive) that would record onto DVDs, would I be able to 'shuffle' my way back to the place last stopped recording and restart from that point or would the DVD...

We are due to have our tv fitted with a separate erm free view top box, so I guess we'll need to buy a dvd recorder (without free view), but would we still be able to record from tv to video or not?...
