We have removed some subcategories from The AnswerBank. If we have removed a much loved subcategory then please let us know however, we think the categories we have removed won't be missed.

If you feel like we could reduce the subcategories even more, please let us know.

If you once posted in a subcategory and you find there isn't anywhere to post, please post in the parent category of that subcategory.

The "Shopping" category is now "Shopping & Style".

The "Family" category is now "Family & Relationships".

Please note, any content that existed within subcategories still exists on The AnswerBank. All we have done is removed these subcategories from the menu to discourage members from using them.

The "Offers & Competitions" category seems to be rarely used for what was intended (sharing and finding Free UK Competitions) and could therefore be got rid of.

There are no well established members that I would allow to be labelled as a troll. We all have different opinions and ways of sparking debate but generally there is always some level of respect.
Obviously not all items will have a link but most news items will.Maybe we could have the rule with the proviso 'where possible'.
Ed//generally there is always some level of respect.//
I agree but there have been many posts in the News section that have nothing to do with the news that have purported to have been news and, in some cases, false news.
I agree Danny. The News section needs to give us some idea what the OP is talking about if they don't post a link. It's so annoying when they don't.
I think we all feel like this and are treading carefully. So,at the risk of having this removed, there is one poster who has continuously used the News section to cause trouble.
Surely this shouldn't be overlooked.

Dannyk13, in those instances it's possible the member doesn't realise that the news they take to be true is actually false. Discussion can help surface the invalidity of certain information.
OK Ed, I surrender.
Me too, Danny. But suspicions still remain.

This thread is about subcategories, not about culture of the News category.
I can never understand the linkaholics in News - don't they pay attention to other sources of News ?

If they don't know what the post is about, then just ignore it or take the poster's word for it.

I see Sport now has been reduced to have just one sub, i.e. Football.

That's a bit prejudiced, there are plenty of other very popular sports.

Football comes tenth in this list which shows the figures for Number of people participating in sport twice a month in England between November 2019 and November 2020, by sport (courtesy statista . com)

Running 7,041,900
Fitness class 6,388,000
Gym session 4,082,900
Exercise machines 3,275,900
Hill and mountain walking 2,909,300
Interval sessions 2,646,200
Weights session 2,388,800
Swimming 2,355,300
Generic fitness training 2,238,000
Football 1,385,700
Golf 806,800
Tennis 696,900
Boxing (includes boxing fitness classes) 610,400
I agree with gromit, "news" should mean anything on a newspaper's or media website's news pages (ie excluding sports) since that's where people get the topics they raise on AB. This may mean Brexit or Ukraine or "OMG Dianne Abbot's said something I don't like". If you try to separate it out from Politics there'll just be endless confusion about where any of those go.
I agree with naomi on the Politics subcategory.
Things like gulliver's Boris ramblings could go in there and leave the News section for actual news.

Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
Canary, it's true that there are other popular sports, but they're not popular on AB in terms of people talking about them, so we can't justify a sub-category for them all. If lots of threads suddenly appear about running, for example, then we could make a sub-category for it, but until that happens, most sport-related threads can go in the main sports category.
canary, wouldnt it be more useful in this instance to weed out the sub categories by "number of posts they attract" rather than how many people play them?
Best not to get personal about any particular folk.

Lie-in King's Fantasy Football league is the main reason the football subcategory is staying.
you can remove them all as far as I'm concerned, wast of space, hardly ever used.
The news section is a joke...Chatternews
