Ed Is it allowed for an AB member to hack into another members account to find out personal and private information and then post on Ab divulging and bragging about it...... Is this breaking Site rules ?

is it possible for abers to discover each others' IP addresses? i am not sure if this would count as "hacking" but it would definitely say which country gulliver was posting from (if he doesn't use a VPN)

I would think only the EDs would have access to IP addresses.

You dont have to have a VPN to appear from somewhere else. If you use a work account it will come out from there. I have had work accounts that come out of Belgium, France USA and various UK locations. And it wasnt the location of the workplace either.

IP addresses are overhyped for knowing about someone.

I like his posts, I find them amusing and they certainly generate a lot of traffic normally.

Plus our Gully isnt as sensitive as some, gives as good as he gets and seems happy for the thread to take a course of its own.

It takes all sorts to make the world go round and as you say Bazille, if you dont like a thread or the person making the OP then dont go on it. Start your own thread for instance.

An IP address will surely say which country you are accessing the internet from regardless of which e-mail account you might be using?

if eds have access to user IP addresses then it stands to reason that somebody else could gain access to it no?

An IP address doesn't show where you are if you are using a VPN as already stated.
Just because the ABEds have access to ABers IP addresses doesn't mean somebody else could gain access to it.

Not necessarily. Most VPN's originate from servers abroad, in addition as I said above if you work for an international company then their IP will come out of whichever country/Town they chose to exit from.

If you hacked into a site it is of course possible to find the datastore on which the subscribers are kept. This often happens as we see in the News to large companies. However hacking is not that simple even if you know how. Most sites will have at least basic firewalls and will have locked out the 'easy' routes in (that I am not going to write here). In addition most sites will have the data encrypted so unless you have the key or have managed to get in using an ID/Password from a senior person with access then its useless. The later is usually where most data breaches occur and is not really hacking (Not that hacking is like you see on the TV). So unless someone got in using the Ed's password it is highly unlikely they would have any useful information. I'm assuming AB has the above, if not I suggest you put it in place.

Oh and Ed's dont store passwords in a file called password.txt, use LastPass or similar as that is another popular way in to decrypt the files. Yes I did see that at a Bank believe it or not. The whole keys to the kingdom in it.
