Puklavec And Friends Slovenian Sauvignon Blanc, currently £6.74 from £8.99.

Let us all salute Waitrose for being the first UK supermarket to stock a Slovenian wine. Puklavec and his friends, as the label kindly informs, picked the grapes near the town of Stajerska on the 6th and 23rd Septemeber, 2009. The wine has an intense bouquet - more intense than your average Sauv Blanc - and mouthwatering flavours of tropical fruits which is given further complexity with a good dose of minerality. It is one of the most concentrated and pure wines I have ever tasted and the overall result is a truly dynamic white with great length; a wine you or your friends won't forget in a hurry! I never thought I'd say this, but this magnificent vino leaves its NZ counterparts firmly in the shade.

Hmmmm.... I wonder if Puklavec is on Facebook...???

Also, I did give Waitrose's own label Cava a try. I can't say I was enamoured and the bubbles were few and far between. Best off sticking to the plain white wine, methinks.

I don't work at Waitrose, I work in Trauma & Orthopaedics.

I've yet to try a wine that tastes solely of grapes... maybe you are thinking of grapetizer or something like that. Having a discerning palate for wine does not make one pompous. If you don't like this thread, why post on it?
You recommend a Waitrose wine- you MUST work at Waitrose. I see that you've been working at several other supermarkets recently- changing your employer every week, in fact.
I know whose comments make more sense.

Well you learn something new everyday!

Bobjugs was telling me that he'd seen an Old Vine Zinfandel advertised in either Lidl or Aldi for a mere £3.99! I've just been googling and I'm astonished to discover that Zinfandel the very same grape as Italy's Primitivo. I shall be checking out the Italian sections of the local stores very shortly...

A Couple of answers removed? I'm guessing they weren't nice.

Anyway, back to the subject in hand. Just had a look in Lidl and think maybe Bobjugs had his wires crossed. Nipped into Morrisons and found a Pepperwood Grove Californian Zinfandel to have a sip or two of later. I've tried Pepperwood's Viognier which was quite stunning and dramatic, and I expect this to be no less! (Will report back on this thread tomorrow).

Has anyone else any nice wine discoveries or bargains to share?

Hi there NoM - only thing is we have no Waitrose really in Cornwall - yet. They have a project for Truro.

On the SMs, Sainsbury's seems the best for wine - nothing really stellar over there today, just the Bergerac Reserve at 2 for 10. Or will it be a Haut Poujeaux this evening (non Sainsburys and from Experience)
i'm still enjoying the morrisons valentino, does me and the mrs nicely. maybe when we get back to the era of pay rises i might venbture out !

Hi DT, I agree with you on the selection of wines from Sainsburys at the moment - some of them are quite fine. I might try the Bernard Series' Basket Press Syrah when next I venture in there.

Ankou, is that a spanish wine in a uniquely shaped bottle?
no. its an italian white. £3.79

i am being a bit facetious, i do venture to others occasionally but rarely remember the names - always rememember the price!! i might be tempted to poke puklavec, if only i had a waitrose nearby.

Yeah, we only moved into our new place last Friday and that's the first time in my life I've lived near a Waitrose. They've got a great booklet you can pick up detailing all their instore and online wines.

As for the Valentino, I think I was getting confused with the Valentín. I think I will have to try that one out.
it provides a nice backdrop for when things are tight.
Good camper's answers removed. Ed beat me to the draw or rather the submission of the report

Indeed. There was a nice pleasant wine I used to drink in Spain during the leaner times, but I'm damned if I can remember the name. Tesco often do some rather drinkable wines at 3 for £12. Or look out for offers like £8.99 each or 2 for £10 in Sainsburys.
