Now that, for those who want to place a simple advert, Gumtree is just another cash register, is there anywhere that has the same sort of reach as that site has but is free or nearly free to use ?

Nothing and everything - I wonder if there is any free equivalent or near equivalent to Gumtree where pretty much anything can be advertised under regional groupings. I am of course aware of eBay which is "one size fits all" by comparison.
