Dog Mess Problem

Hello, this is my first post, so please help me out

My 5 year old tiny Jack Russell, will wee when taken out, but will make a mess in the house, even when she has just been out. She seems to head for a rug or bath mat.

This is becoming more of a problem as I am recovering from an op and can't be checking her/ mats all the time!

We live in country, so during day she often has the run of the garden/ field and doesn't associate defecating with being on the lead or with my opening the door - that is more like play time for her.

She was in kennels for a week in February and I think she is worse since then She has never been brilliant.

The vet says she is ok.She is lovely and a bit spoiled !

are you saying that she has NEVER been clean in the house?

She needs serious re-education, preferably by a pro. Not easy or cheap but unless you have someone handy who can do it for you, there is not much you can do in your condition. Your health comes first.

Maybe if you feed her close to the bathmat she'll stop going there.... but she'll just choose another place for a dump spot. If you ever do catch her doing it outside, make a big fuss of it and praise her more than usual.

You need to set up a routine here. Walks at certain times of the day, take her out and walk her endlessly until she has a poo, plenty of praise. Put her out after every meal, upon her waking up, first thing in the morning/last thing at night. Go out into the garden with her when you let her out each time, rain or shine, keep an eye on her and do not let her in until she has had a poo, then once she has gone - lots n lots of praise. It will be slow process but you must be patient and consistent, dont give in, she will learn again to be clean in the house, good luck.
