Neighbours Neglecting Their Cats

Our neighbours don't give a damn about their animals. They are always riddled with fleas and worms are constantly starving and are going through everyone's bin bags they are that hungry they try and steal my dogs food. They recently went away and left them to fend for themselves. We got back off holiday recently to find one of their cats dead in the back garden and it had been there at least four days by the state of it. I went and told them and they didn't give a damn they then left it there another two days this for me was extremely upsetting. They have a young cat who is just under a year old she is now on her second pregnancy in about four months. The cats sleep in our sheds and this little one comes in to ours for peace and food. I know I shouldn't feed her but I cannot bare to see any animal suffer. I have contacted RSPCA in the past but I get the usual need more evidence etc. They are not approachable people and I don't want to fall out with them. This poor cat is due to have her kittens anytime now and I don't know what to do with her as she refuses to leave the house. Every time their cats get pregnant they struggle to rehome all of them and end up keeping the ones left. Their attitude to spaying is awful as they think it's cruel and kinder to let them have kittens constantly.

Have you tried your local cats protection branch? They may not be able to help but they will, hopefully, give you some advice.

If she is getting pregnant in the house the male concerned may be one of her own kittens - that can be very problematic .

Thanks waiting for them to get in touch and yes I saw her get caught by her brother. The owner thought it was hilarious!! :(

ive found the RSPCA totally useless in the past

personally.(though not legal) i would try to get into the garden and get the cat,and take it to the RSPCA cos they wont get off thier a**es,they will probably put it down but it will be out of its misery

I would take the cat to a local charity shelter who spay the animals before rehoming and tell them you found her but cannot keep her & sod your neighbours if that is their attitude they don't deserve to keep animals. I agree the RSPCA are useless.

Find a local cat shelter and take the cats to them, tell them they are strays and you have tried to find the owners without success. Most animal shelters will spay and neuter before rehoming any animals in their care so the poor queens will at least not have to have any more litters.

Do you have a local animal welfare FaceBook page?

I ask as my local area does and the work they do is phenomenal in the care for local animals. They've recently organised and successfully pulled off catching a colony of feral cats that were living on a service station. They've captured, and taken to a local cattery who have spayed, vetted (that a word?) them and put the suitable ones up for adoption.

I'm sure if you have such a page they'll rally round to offer assistant and possibly "make these cats all of a sudden and mysteriously leave their 'home"

There is a cat rescue centre I have contacted and waiting for a reply. I really don't think she has long in her pregnancy left and I'm worried if I don't keep a close eye on her and make sure she's fed properly her milk either won't come in or will dry up very quickly. Someone suggested yesterday that I just leave her to it and that it's none of my business and by feeding someone's cat I could get into trouble. It is not in my nature to see any animal suffer regardless if it is someone's pet or a wild animal. I really don't know what to do for the best :(

It's a No Brainer, take her to your local rescue and leave her there. DO IT TODAY.

What you have to do with the RSPCA is get tough. I would tell them that if they won't come out to these cats, I will notify the local and national press of their incompetence and I will also write an angry letter to their HQ's complaining bitterly at the lack of action when I ring the emergency number. This ALWAYS works, although it is a pain it has to be done before any help is given. I just don't take any of their crap any more. The law is that animals have to be fed, watered and given appropriate shelter and it seems to me that these cats are getting none of this. The RSPCA HAVE to enforce this law. Good luck x

Do you have a local branch of Cat's Protection. I would rather phone them than the RSPCA or the RSSPCA. This amounts to animal cruelty.

Let us know how you get on. I had a similar but smaller issue years back with a neighbour's kitten - they didn't give a damn about her, and eventually moved so I adopted her. The RSPCA told me that if she had been abandoned, there was no issue about previous ownership.

I have been in touch with a local rescue centre unfortunately they are full and have no room at the moment but if I'm happy for a short while to take care of her they will supply me with a crate and food etc. I have gone over with them about this poor kitty belonging to someone they have stated that unfortunately the cats welfare must come first. The other cats in question haven't been home so far if they do I am to take photos and weigh them if possible as evidence. Over the years they have lost five cats who have gotten fed up and moved on somewhere else. This to me is a strong indication that they aren't happy there and have sought homes elsewhere. Spoken again to RSPCA and they will contact me soon but if the other cats are nowhere to be seen then there isn't much they can do. As for the queen I'm taking care of she is gaining weight slowly so they said she wouldn't be classed as malnourished!! Typical answers
