At 11 years she might be going a bit deaf, blind or demented or any combination of the same...its seems significant that she only does it when you leave her. Can I suggest a vet checkup to find out what is going on?
My old cat does it - she wanders up stairs and makes the most awful noise. I have taken her to the vet and apart from being very old, deaf and senile she is fine! Seriously if they start losing their hearing they become more vocal. It is always a good idea to get them checked over if their behaviour starts to change - at 11 she may need an MOT just to make sure she's okay.
It is just possible that it could be a thyroid problem. I took Bandit to the vet to the other day for a check up and the vet mentioned that she could have an over active thyroid, one of the symptons is yowling a lot. It may be worth a mention to your vet. I don't believe this is a serious problem if it is this and it is easily treatable.

My 2 year old male does that. Don't think he has a hearing problem cos I only have to mention the word "dinner" or open a packet in the kitchen and he appears from 2 floors up.
I think it is a "where are you?" thing. He only does it if he comes in and I am upstairs and then he SCREAMS until I answer him. Once he knows where I am, he shuts up.
