elderly cat

My cat is 19 years old and is under medication for thyroid and kidney problems. She is deaf, but very active and affectionate. But the problem is that she goes outside to poo.....BUT then pees on the carpet! No logic to this. Have sprayed the area with repellant, but this does not work. Currently keeping her in the kitchen at night, from where she has access to the cat-flap.

Any suggestions please???

oh bless her, she is a good age. the only thing I can think of is to have a litter tray in a corner somewhere, and hope she will use it.

I agree with afcjan. My old she cat is 21yrs old, and she started with this same problem in the recent cold weather. She would go out briefly to poo, and then when she was indoors she would wee just wherever she happened to be. It seems that with old age the need to wee happens before the cat can think about traversing the cat flap to go outside. I provided her with a litter tray which she now uses, and have had no further problem. Hope it works for your cat.

As suggested, the old queen is probably getting too slow to answer the signal that she needs to wee and getting outside, plus if it is cold or wet, she may just dman well not feel like it!

A litter tray will probably help - cats are fussy and only like their wee to smell if they are marking territory.

The poor little soul - she's obviously quite confused - this old age lark doesn't come easily!

Irritating though it is, she has no doubt given you 19 years of loyalty and priceless memories and now deserves mega amounts of understanding in her dotage.

Hi mightymouse. I have a 19 year old with the same health problems and she did the exact same thing. She suddenly started going out into the hall and miaowing then peeing on the carpet. I have now got her a litter tray. She was still confused at first but I went and picked her up and put her on her box and she goes on there quite happily now. I'm sure your old lady will be fine

I am so happy with your responses. I love my little puss, "Krystle" to death, she is a gem, and nearly 20 years old. I know that her time is limited, and I will ensure that she is happy and content.

Incidentally...she was named after Krystle Carrington from "Dynasty" years ago.....and her twin brother, gorgeous ginger puss...who disappeared tragically at one year old....was named "Blake"....whole street new these mad kittens as "The Carringtons' !!!

Is that sad or what???????

Kevin and Sally (Corrie) might be the names of our next kittens....

Sounds lovely mightymouse. My old lady is looking quite frail and she is a little senile but I love her to bits and am determined that her final time with me will be good, so she is spoilt.

One of our cats started doing this and the vet diagnosed "struvite crystals" in her urine. We had to feed her a special food from the vets but it cured the problem very quickly.

I am so thankful for all your thoughts, and I given Krytsle appropriate cuddles from you all. The litter tray may work, but she has not has any more accidents the last 3 days. This morning I was gardening, and although she is totally deaf, she followed me around all the time, demanding attention....which I happily gave her. Her hearing may have gone, but here eyesight is purrfect.

Currently she is sleeping on the sofa, and will receive more cuddles very soon.

I don't know about Krystle, mightymouse, my oldie (Florence) may be deaf but there is nothing wrong with her sense of smell either

Ahh, I hope that Krystle gives you a few more years of happiness yet, both my cats are 16 years of age and have been with me since I bought them home from Cat Rescue when they were both approx 1 years. One of my cats Ozzie was proving a real problem by weeing in the house in the same way and I tried all the spray remedies. I then got a litter tray and the problem disappeared immediately. So it sounds like it could be a solution if Graham W's suggestion does not work. Give big hugs and kisses to Krystal from me, Ozzie and Bandit!
