Owls

Our dog went crackers again last night ( early hours) when hearing an Owl hooting. My question is why do Owls hoot ? If they are the silent killers we are told they are, surely to hoot would give away their position to any prey in the area & warn them off.

The 'silent killer' tag no doubt stems from when it swoops in for the kill. The fringes on an owl's flight feathers makes it's flight near silent. Most other birds have rigid edges to the flight feathers which gives more streamline but makes a whistling noise as it moves through the air in flight, this makes the familiar noise when pigeons etc. fly.
