I was out walking in the countryside yesterday and noticed some tiny blue flowers growing in the scrub grass on the edges of the tracks. They were just above ground level. A little further back they grew a little higher but not much. Further back again and they didn't exist. They have four petals and a bright yellow centre. I wish I had taken a photo. Any idea what they are called?

Speedwell?
maybe speedwell?
Question Author
That looks likely although having looked speedwell up it says its a long stemmed plant and these were anything but. Then again it might be the wrong part of the season for height.
There are quite a few speedwells and would suggest you saw the very common Germander speedwell
the speedwells in my lawn grow very close to the ground

Yes that looks more like it. Thanks all.
Sounds like one of the many speedwell's.
The ones at the edge of the track may have become stunted due to trampling and the ones further back could possibly be drawn up by slightly shadier conditions.
possibly forget me nots
