i have 2 female guineas and a female rabbit running together. One of the guineas has had mucky fur round her back end for a couple of days and the other one has started with it now. Their stools are normal. Could they be in season? Are they seasonal breeders? They are eating normally and aren't subdued as if they are ill.
Hi , its possible your rabbit could be humping your guinea pigs (hence the mucky backs)as they should'nt be really kept together as rabbits bully guinea pigs, is the rabbit neutered(speyed) as female rabbits can be quite stroppy!!! also i really wouldnt cut the fur with scissors use electric hair clippers i have some small wahl one's which i got from work (im a vet nurse) my g.pig is long haired so i clip him alot, if your still worried ask your local vets to take a look.
Had this with my rabbitt last week - took him to vets and she said check twice a day for muck round back end and make sure you wash with cotton wool and warm water as rabbitts and guinea pigs are prone to this at this time of year!
Can't remember name but the muck attracts insect (think she called it something "worm" ).
She explained if animal is left unclean exposed to this insect can be very dangerous even if left for even a few days.
If stools change though or messy fur becomes often take to vet, as 5 yrs ago my sisters guinea pig was very poorly sadly and this was a symptom. Hope this helps, good luck.
The conidtion is called 'fly strike' is it is where fly's will be attracted to the dirty bottom and actually lay eggs-lavae(maggots) in the dirt and even into the animal itself which can be fatal. I have heard you can get a product which you can actually spray on the bum to detract pests but I have not seen one. I have just bought a product that is supposed to detract pests from the cages- but it is still in the trial phase at the moment, so cannot say for sure it works. It does say do not use on animal.
you can get rearguard from your vets its a liquid which has sponge applicator and you sponge it onto your rabbits bottom area this stops flystrike its good!
