Not much you can do about the barking. Is he barking because he's scared....could try Rescue Remedy...a few drops on his tongue before the journey.

Hi Gary,
You can stop him from looking out of the windows by covering them up. Old sheets blocking his view out of all view, including the safety bar. I know it works as we did this for our pooch. It just means using your side mirrors alot more for driving as the back window must also be covered lol....
Good Luck :-)

I have a similar problem. She pants, whines etc. whenever I start the engine. I have tried DAB, a spray which is supposed to calm them down, you could try that. It didn't work for me, but I know it worked for a friend. I have tried putting her in a cage & even covering said cage (it works for parrots) but to no avail. I have now resolved to put her in the car as often as possible & not go anywhere. I think the problem comes from the fact that whenever she got in the car we were going to the beach or a country walk, in other words losts of pleasure for the dog.
Divegirl: tell me more about the stuff you put on the dog's tongue please.

our dog used to drool and bark and was realy freaked out with the car, it took ages but we started by just standing next to it and then me sitting the seat with him outside then we put him in the cage with a treat but the door open. After about a month he stopped barking and being upset then we took him round the block ust a 5 min trip and then extended the times. it took a very long time but it worked and this summer we went to Wales which was 7 hours away, no problems at all.
No drooling no barking perfect journey.
Now I need to train the kids lol
