Does anyone know roughly how much it costs to convert a tropical tank into a marine tank? I want to do it and just want a rough idea of what is involved and how much it will cost

A couple of points first off....ask lots of questions, however stupid they seem......the only stupid question is the one you don't ask !!!!!
Also, be patient. Don't over stock or stock too quickly and always keep up with water changes.
As for cost, you need to know what you want to keep. A fish only (FO) tank will cost you less to set up that a soft coral reef aquarium which will be less than a stony coral reef.
You will need salt, an RO unit (essential), a protein skimmer. good water circulation, good lighting (if keeping corals) filteration (usually live rock), test kits, hydrometer.
Those are the ABSOLUTE minimum you will need. Again, it'll depend on what you want to keep.

This hobby although amazing and beautiful will cost you quite a bit. The main decision that needs to be made is if you want it a fish only tank or a reef tank, the reef tank costs generally far more to set up and operate. If you dont do things right and you take shortcuts it will only end in failure. I have a 55gal reef currently and i would say my monthly running costs are near 80 or so a month. Total setup at retail would be in the neighborhood of $3000. It is a very expensive hobby. But im addicted. My clownfish just laid another nest outside of there anemone.
