If it's true, then these sheep need to be told to stop what they're doing http://www.aberdareonline.co.uk/content/public/forum/message .asp?forum=1&ID=35442

Full grown sheep with full fleece cannot return to their four legs if rolling on their back in a filed. Mutton dressed up as lamb. Mutton write them off. Ewe see they arent as daft as you think! Perhaps they've HERD it's a CATTLE grid-iron and don't consider themselves Cattle?
Hello Angel, welcome! The site will always provide a mixture of humourous answers - and the odd sensible one! Sheep can get up off their backs - this is an urban myth. Similarly, penguins can also get up if they fall over backwards from watching Air Force planes flying over the Falkland Islands - this was a famous joke put about by sailors who were over there, advising gullible people that they were on 'penguin patrol' - helping penguins back on their feet. It's just a myth. See you soon.

According to the nice people at the Black Sheep Brewery, the local Yorkshire name for a sheep stuck on its back was a "Rigwelter". Hence the name of one of their potent brews!!
You spoilt my day Andy. I was just going to take advantage of the situation. Sheep lying on their backs......Mmmm. Anyway, drat and double drat. :o)
Shhep can get stuck on their backs. Any sheep farmer will tell you about ewes that have lost eyes to crows from being stuck on their backs. So if you see one, don't be like robber1, go and help her up!
