Supplementary and quite shocking revelation, snakes do not have vocal cords. must put this in the religion thread, should cause quite a stir.

folklore would have us believe that they hiss, but the few snakes that I have met didn't. I recently saw a pair of western whip snakes in my garden going through a courtship routine but neither of them said anything within the frequency range of my hearing. I suspect that they had got past the stage of 'do you come here often' and 'what's a nice snake like you doing in a place like this'.

A voice would not be much good as snakes do not have ears to hear with. They do however have a good sense of vibration and can easily feel a man/animal walking past.
you are absolutely right wildwood I have never seen a snake with ears either.
I have heard peter mandelson speaking though..
^^ ..........and with forked tongue.
I should venture in to Animals et al more often.. right old nuggets of glorious information to be gleaned....
