Have had a beautiful woodpecker visiting the nut feeder for weeks now. Today he flew into an upstairs window and broke his neck. Very sad, they are really beautiful birds.

awww, poor little thing! What an awful way to go :-(
It flew at its reflection in the glass
Oh that is sad, especially the lovely colourful ones. We have rotten magpies, raiding nests around here.
We had to put nets in all of our south facing windows to stop the birds flying in to them.
We had a magpie catch and kill a baby woodpecker in our garden just a day or so back.
Oh - that is tragic. How very sad.
What a shame.
When you consider that their necks must take a heck of a hammering, with all the wood pecking they do.
It must have been flying at quite a speed for it to break its neck, it makes me wonder if it was being chased and looking for somewhere to hide
Thankfully - it wouldn't have known much about it.

Have wrapped it in kitchen roll and put in the bin - sad end for such a beautiful bird.
:-( Foolish bird. Still I guess that is evolution in action. The individual is of no importance as long as the species change to instinctively not do that which risks premature death.

Think it was just a young bird as a much bigger one is back at the nut feeder today. Ah well, hope he takes care of himself!
