Alerting AB members to a question.
88 Answers
I doubt that it would be possible for AB to have such a facility. However, it would be nice if there was a means whereby one could draw the attention of a member to an item in which they could be interested and may wish to comment, because of their particular knowledge on the subject concerned.

We were, once upon a time, thinking of doing something like a profile option for questions you might be interested would generate a weekly email.
You Ron, might enter a few key phrases for things you like, for example: "Kingfishers" you would then have the option to restrict where you'd like to be notified from - choosing "Birds & Twitching" and "Travel" as you think these would be most relevant to you, and would avoid questions about "Dudley Highschool Kingfishers (Netball Team)".
Every week a digest of the most popular and unanswered questions would be sent to you for your perusal.
I know this is a little different to what you want (ideally you want ChuckFickens phone number?) but it might go some way to achieve the goal?
As I say, this is only an idea and no plans have been put into place to make this a reality yet.
All the best,
Ed

Good afternoon Ed......Thanks for having outlined the ideas which are being floated within AB on this matter. It might be worthwhile sounding-out members on the item concerned.
I apologise for some of my comments having been a somewhat major contributory factor to the thread having gone off course. Nevertheless, it was all very interesting and I appreciate all who responded.
Incidentally, whilst it could be useful to have Chuck's tel.no., I would prefer to have yours.:-)
Best wishes....Ron.

viv...i was referring to the PM part of the thread...
people already use the FAO option...but i still think its kind of putting people on the spot a bit...almost demanding an answer from them and making them feel like they have to respond...this is a forum for all and it should be down the users what they respond to and what not
as i said, certain members would get loads of notices asking them to comment...and if it was made part of the site facilities then people woudl use it more and more, and probably excessively, thinking it was 'the done thing'... almost every medical question would link to sqad etc and law would be buildersmate, barmaid etc, same for other topics ... and thats simply not fair on them....

Hi joko.....Please smile when I say that Viv is my wife.:-)
I can appreciate what you are saying but there are occasions when I wish to draw someone's attention to something on which I would like a further comment. There have been instances where I have put forward a question (let's assume you have answered but have not 'subscribed') and whilst the answer is what I require there is a small point on which I wish to have clarification. Are you suggestion that I should then resort to FAO and thereby start another thread to alert the respondents attention, because he/she is no longer viewing my original posting. Even an FAO can be missed if it is in a section which one doesn't regularly visit but have given an answer. Hence the reason for a previous view of mine that all questions and answers should be subjected to automatic 'subscription' and obviate the need for e/mail alerts.

P.P.S.....I hope the Ed is still 'subscribed' to this thread.
joko....The more I think about this matter in consideration of your comments, I feel that a section for posting FAOs could work; providing it is not used for discussions.
For instance, if you are no longer threaded to my current posting, I would be able to put out a call to you; along the following lines:-
