Unfortunately, I fear that, if we continue this thread along its original lines, ABEd will ban the lot of us.
jno, I think that this business of the gender of slang words is fairly arbitrary and diminutives of masculine nouns do not necessarily become feminine although if there is someone on AB with a knowledge of linguistics, maybe they will be able to inform us otherwise.

Words ending in "ette" or several vowels "look feminine" and usually are. However, it is "le squelette" and "un incendie". There are also lots of words which have different meanings depending on whether they are masculine or feminine (le moule, la moule; le voile, la voile etc).
The only rule to which there is no exception is the one that states that there is an exception to every rule.
