What does it mean ?
Well to me it means outwith CB you dont post to someone youve noticed on a recent serious thread and ask how they are diddling (so to speak). How do posters feel when they have formulated and given thought to a post only for it to be over looked by a 'how are ya pet' type post omitting any substance to the thread and thus rendering your well thought out post redundant?
Its just not polite at all even outwith CB is it?
AB is surely a big melting pot is it not -its only polite to keep greetings to within the post and not make it a post alone -hmmm??? Its all about everyone and not someone (google for quote cant remember) :)

Unless you deliberately want to display contempt to the person you are addressing you stick either a :-) or a ;-) at the end of a potentailly contentious message and it makes all the difference to the mood of what you are saying.
My experience of AB however has displayed that there are a contingent of posters that seem to be hungry for confrontation or unsolveable trouble no matter how much you display your benign or humerous intent.

It's a basic necessity of forum/chatroom use IMO (in my opionion).
When you talk to someone face to face, you can tell if they're being humerous or hostile by their demeanor, you can't do that online - hence the use of :-) ("I'm happy") or ;-) ("I'm not being entirely serious") or :-/ ("hmm") face emoticons.
This is ESPECIALLY important IMO when there is a regular online community of people who may be housebound or never intend to meet their online friends IRL (In Real Life) for some other reason.

eh? I don't understand this post - are you saying you should post personal hellos in posts that are already there, or not to.
you say" you dont post to someone youve noticed on a recent serious thread and ask how they are diddling " but then say "its only polite to keep greetings to within the post and not make it a post alone "
