OK ABers, it's over to you again. I've just finished reading the last lot of books you all recommended. I loved ascent, the meaning of night and the smoke jumper. Adored 'we have to talk about Kevin' but didn't really get on with 'on beauty' (although nicely writen). What next?

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.
I ditched my usual murder mysteries to read this and was so pleased I did. Wonderful book and a real tear jerker ! Centres around the lives of two women in Afghanistan .How their paths in life cross and the effect the war has on those lives.
Going Gently - David Nobbs
Death and the Penguin - Andrey Kurkov
Woman in Black - Susan Hill
I am currently reading The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and really enjoying it.
Also have A Thousand Splendid Suns but not started yet
I wasn't overly impressed with "A Thousand Splendid Suns". It was okay but not as good as it was cracked up to be, I thought. However I did enjoy "On Beauty" so it just goes to show how we all differ and a good job too! Glad you liked "The Meaning of Night" and "We need to talk about Kevin". Have you read "Vernon God Little"? One book which I really enjoyed recently (it's very long and takes some suspension of belief) is "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell". I have also just read "The Girls" which is about the lives of conjoined twins - good book.
One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Sophies World.

Possibly both a bit of an acquired taste but with perseverence worth it I think.

One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night is very funny if you fancy some light reading.
I'm in the middle of reading "in the woods" by Tana french it's a good read but not sure if it's the kind of book that your're looking for.
I love 'going gently' and I am just reading it for the second time. However the Nobbs book I would most recommend is 'second from last in the sack race'. All about childhood - bits brilliant.
I hate when people name books that I know I've read and can't sodding remember...

Ponders why second from last in the sack race rings a bell
iTV did a very poor TV dramatization of the first two Henry Pratt books (second was Pratt of the Argus)Apologies for bad typing, my iPod has a spell check thing that is doing bad things.
You're coming in to question m'dear.

Oh God, Henry Pratt is so familiar... Why can't I remember damn it?! It's not the same as that book about the awful family inthe 1980's is it? The one with the insane lady who isn't that insane and flies the aeroplane?
My book, you talking about my book china?

well funny thing is the lead character reminds me of you, she's ballsy brave and speaks her mind LOL and not to mention her sense of humour......are you sure it's not you, china?
Why thank you Louisa, I don't recognise that description of myself but it's very nice of you to say! I actually meant Gromits book but as it goes, I just googled yours and I know I've read and fogotten that one too.... Like I don't have enough problems sleeping! ;0)
No, henry starts life as an evacuee up north. Becomes a journalist (second book). Works for the cucumber marketing board while having his mid life crisis, then the fourtth book in the trilogy has Henry becoming a TV chef on a Question of Salt
ahhh no worries China :) can you find it in your heart to forgive me for being a CELINE DION fan ? LOL
Astonishing Splashes of Colour by Claire Morrall (sp?).....also The Lovely Bones by,,,the name escapes me-sorry. I too would reccomend Sophies World..about a young girls exploration of philosophy.
Louisa - No. No I can't. But I can look past it!

What you're saying Gromit is like my french. I sort of get the drift, I know I know this but I'm ******** if I can remember!
