I never did like To Kill a Mockingbird much either!
Agree with Bathsheba that Twenty Thousand Streets under the Sky is excellent
Tim Pears "In a Land of Plenty" or "A Revolution of the Sun" are great as are most of John Irving's books, particularly "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" and "Cider House Rules"
Margaret Attwood is brilliant, try "Alias Grace" or "The Blind Assassin".
These are more modern classics but have you ever read any DH Lawrence - certainly worth a go
I have just finished reading Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, an ex-convict, ex-gunrunner, etc. and can thoroughly recommend it as a thumping good read and a real eye-opener.
