As follows are emails too and from student and tutor!
Dear tutor
Thankyou for my constructive feedback for my reflection assignment, this will help me for future assignments. The only thing I was unsure of was…………
“When referencing online journals they should initially be written as a normal journal reference”
Please could you help me understand what you mean?
Thankyou student

Dear student,
Well done and thank you for your feedback. With regard to your referencing on line journals you need to write the journal out in full i.e. Blogs,J (2012) Writing Reflection on Skills Clusters, Nursing Standard, 12(13)33-34 http//………

Dear Tutor,
Sorry to be a pain, but just so i get referencing correct on my next assignments.....the example shown on the school of health referencing guide says.......for reference list..........e.g
Thompson,J.L. (1968) Competency and measured performance outcomes, Journal of workplace learning, 10 (5), 210-231
is this incorrect because it doesn’t have the web address? I was told by previous tutors to treat it as if its a normal journal (as if its been bought). thankyou from student

Dear student,
Yes, that is correct but just either write the name of the journal in either italics or bold.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.to your original question - no. you don't need to put web references to journal articles as you can probably get them from your uni library anyway. however, you will probably need harvard referencing system at the very least. i have studied at BSc level and now MSc level; and throughout my studies at a russel group/red brick university (i.e. quite a good one!) and the following example is what is deemed essential presentation:
Thompson, J (1968) Competency and measured performance outcomes. Journal of workplace learning (10) 5 pp210-31.
1. only the first initial of an author is needed
2. pay attention to where full stops are (and are not) and are not needed - too many look messy and unprofessional. if it doesn't need to be in there, don't put it in!
3. journal title should be in italics - but for the life of me i cannot do it on ab!
4. first journal number is in brackets; second is not
5. page numbers are either set as pp210-31 (minimum of characters required) or, for example pp296-304.
6. if you get a journal online, you do not need the web address, but if you get a more official document, such as an nhs policy or act of government, you will need to put the web reference in; i.e.
Thompson, J (1968) Competency and measured performance outcomes. Journal of workplace learning (10) 5 pp210-31 [Online] Accessed: 15.02.12

(the web address needs to be underlined and i usually place them in blue text to highlight as a link if possible)
books are slightly different, i.e.
Gerritsen, T (2011) Bloodstream (4th Edition) London: Harper Collins.
1. Title of the book will be in italics
2. You have to check when the book was first published and what edition you have - this one was first published in 1998, but i have a newer version
3. again, keep things clean with no full stops/commas where brackets break up the reference and only at the end of a reference if necessary
hope this helps - i find it is a very tidy and easy way to read references. commas, full stops and initials all over the place look very untidy and unprofessional. you need to give it a clean, minimal approach and you will not be picked over if they can be checked and explored easily by those marking your work. if you require any other help with different forms of referencing, give me a shout and i will subscribe to your thread. good luck! x

most do use harvard...mine is a little improvement on it to make it look uniform and waaaaaay less untidy. i'm a bit of a neat freak. but you should check what they want you to do and make it as neat as possible and uniform throughout. that's how i ended up doing mine - and given the dozens of essays/dissertations i have handed in - i have never been penalised by my approach. i do despair when i read other people's referencing and each one is different and all over the place - it looks so untidy. it needs to be the same throughout, whichever approach they want you to use. see if you can find out and i will happily suggest an ocd/neat approach to make them happy.
Agree,

As lcg says, I do it like this
Thompson, J (1968) Competency and measured performance outcomes. Journal of workplace learning (10) 5 pp210-31 [Online] Accessed: 15.02.12
www.whateverisintheadressbarofthedocument.com
but you really should check your student guide, or ask student support - since each Uni I've studied with has its own house style. Some use Harvard, some don't.
