in viewing a painting, how do you find the horizon line and vanishing point and thus the artist's perspective?

Use a ruler if possible - the horizon line should be roughly a third up from the bottom or a third down from the top; Never in the middle. But normally, your eye is automatically drawn into the centre point. Take a look at my stuff at www.kingart.co.uk - I use a lot of perspective
