Now that JK Rowling has officially named her next book who do you think is the half-blood prince?? I initally thought it could possibly be something to do with Neville Longbottom, but have since remembered that both his parents were wizards therefore he is full blood. Anyone any suggestions as to who it could possibly be??

They state that the Weasley's are pureblood numerous times throughout Book 5, and I'm pretty sure that they are also on Sirius' family tree. Remember "If you only let your children date pure-bloods, youre not going to have a lot to chose from as there arent many of us left. Arthur is something like my second cousin once removed... and Molly is my..." Yeah, I forgot what Molly was, but they're pureblood... so you lose.
And... (wow I like to type alot, eh?)
Although I still believe Book 6 will have a lot to do with Godric Gryffindor.... all of you are have come up with brilliant theories about Dean and Seamus. As for my opinion, if the HBP was either of those two, I don't think it would be Dean.
The reason why I think this is because...
J.k.Rowling used to have a lot of background information about Dean in her books, stating that he was not a mudblood as we were always lead to believe but a half-blood, but she and her editer decided that it was safe to omit this information from the books, as it had no relevance to the plot. But, if Dean was the half blood prince, and J.K.Rowling already wrote a story about his families past, I doubt she would have taken it out of her story to suddenly introduce it to us books later. I think that if there was something important about Dean that we should know of, her and her editer would not find using his family history in the story "irrelevant."
As for Seamus... hmm.... I don't know....
Iconhotel you have yet again been correct with your theories. JKR doesn't just put something in unless it would have some relevency later in the book (except for mark evens) the mirror of Sirius IS relevent. Wat im thinking now is that the mirrors in Moaning Myrtles bathroom could be a MAJOR clue in book 6, espicially when the bathroom is above, wat my i ask you? the Chamber of Secrets, the very spot where some ppl said that watever harry did or saw was relevent to figuring out who the HBP (some of you might already know wat i am getting at, or else if this is boring you read on) then the mirrors (is wat he saw) could play a role. It could be possible, but then again all these theories, JKR has been planning the HP series (i think) since 1991 so anything that could SEEM irrelevent will most diffently be important late.
i've got afeeling that it could be Hagrid. i mean, it makes sense doesn't it? hagrids a half blood and he's a pretty big character, plus some one you wouldn't expect. i've heard a lot of rumours about who it may be, but i'm pretty sure it's hagrid. i've also heard rumours of hermione getting killed off which i really hope is NOT true because she's like, my favourite! but hey, i'm just 14... what do i know?
ok, so i've just read like, all the answers and i've rolled them all into one...it's either Dumbledore,Neville Longbottom, Hagrid, Dudley,Tom Riddle(asuming you could change the prophacy and turn Voldemort back into tom riddle, which is also asuming that voldemort wasn't evil in the first place, which we all found out he was in hp and the chamber of secrets),some newly introduced Mark Evans kid( which i admit does sound intreging), the new DADA teacher(which seems very likely), or once again jk rowling has added a new main character once again that we have never heard of or she mentioned three books ago which makes the character list harder and harder to follow.but i don't care who it is cuz the books keep getting better. by-the-way...wtf is up with harry being such a moron in the third book? he was such an a-hole to everyone around him. i can understand cho chang being really depressed about cedric and i wouldn't have minded if he was depressed or a little bit angry but he just felt like he should take it out on everyone else... wait i'll go post that as a new question...

I have a feeling that the HBP is Dumbledore.Rememeber he has to make to Harry for "an old man's mistake". I think he will thoroughly train Harry in Book 6 in various subjects like occlumency and he will (probably) be killed at the end of book 6. Harry has not the skills nor power to face Voldemort one on one and on quite a few occassions Dumbledore has saved him from being killed (refer to books 1,4 and 5).I am sure J.K would not want her hero to be one who fans think cannot get along without Dumbledore' help. So I think one whole book (the final one) Harry and all fans will have to be content without Dumbledore's presence.
JKR stated in an interview that Mark Evans is a peripheral type character and is not related to Harry. Dean Thomas is another possibility. Unbeknownst to Dean and his mother his father was a wizard and was murdered by Voldemort. His mother later remarried a muggle. Dean believes himself to be a muggle and does not know that his is a half-blood wizard. Colin Creevey was sought out by the Basilist because he is a muggle as is his younger brother Dennis. Read the Harry Potter Lexicon for history, interviews, and time lines.

I don't actually think 'Prince' in the title would mean someone who has power or wealth. I've been trying to figure out who could be the half blooded prince. At first I thought it was Ron, but since I have not finished OotP I don't know anyone named Evans, so it could be this Evans person. Could this Evans person be Welsh? It would be nice to have someone Welsh in a HP book! But the origins Sirius are still unknown, perhaps one member of the Order?.....
It might be mark evens but then again dumbledore's too smart to not know if petunia had a brother! oh and This is the latest news i have maybe someone else could figure this out(all from JKR)
1) harrys shortest summer
2)volts birth
3)tonks sticks around
4)moning myrtle plays a larger role
5)Narcissa-Dracos mom-plays a large role
6)what Dudle saw with the dementors
7)graveyard on hogwarts is introduced!
8)prince isn't volt or Harry
9)the 1st chapter is from the Philosophers stone
does that help?
p.s keep in mind she might be trying to thow all of you off with Dean Thomas in the backround of that web site.
I also agree with Dotty about the prince being someone whos actually a prince. the title could be a pun. like the half-blood prince being someone who has control over the half bloods hence being prince of them but also being pure? i dunno just a thought. but i'm sticking with Mark Evens becouse we dont know what dudly saw with the dementors (like a long lost cousin after him?) and petunia knew what dementors were. maybe she lied about hearing her sister talk about them. Maybe she tried to be a squib but met and fell in love with Mr.Dursly and so gave it up? like i said..just a thought.
Rowling has stated that all remaining threads of the half-blood prince that were in the chamber of secrets were removed. It seems the most likely that the character described behind the previously unlocked door is the half-blod prince. However, for sake of speculation, could it be a descendant of Godric Griffindor...?
