Paul McCartney was recently looking at a painting of a girl with a guitar. It appears that it's not for sale, but would fetch at least 50,000,000 - as would, I imagine, several others, but if they were all put to auction, I could see the prices going up further still.
I would say that most of the worlds greatest paintings would far exceed the pollock. The sales we see are just auction records and there are thousands of paintings which will never be sold at auction as they are all in the hands of major galleries around the world.
No major work of some artists ever comes up for auction.
There has been a trend away from the french impressionists in the last two years with 20th century art now coming to the fore.

It's difficult to say. Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso - not forgetting Willem de Kooning. There are so many artists who've produced masterpieces in their time. As Not a Clue says, many of the best pieces are in the hands of private collectors or galleries, so they're hardly likely to be sold in the near future, but if they WERE all to be sold at auction, I hate to imagine the prices that they'd command.
There are major works of art by Italian, French, Dutch and British artists which are virtually priceless?
Anything major by Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Canaletto and lots of Italian Renaissance. Any major painting by Constable (Hay Wain) Turner (Fighting Temeraire) Gainsborough or Stubbs.
Every major gallery has many famous paintings the list is endless.

If the Mona Lisa were sold today it is estimated that it could fetch up to 7 times its 1962 insurance valuation which would put it at about 320m ($670m). But as said it is extremely difficult to put a price on these things, as such an iconic and desirable painting could achieve a lot more than that if it were ever to be sold.
