Help !! Some years ago I read a book (novel) about a shooting competition in cowboy times, in which they shot at glass balls thrown into the air. If anybody has any idea, I would be very grateful. I know it's a long shot (no pun intended) but if you don't ask ........................

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It sounds as if the glass balls referred to are Victorian-style shooting targets - glass balls were stuffed with feathers, flicked into the air by a spring-operated thingy and shot at by toffs. I suppose clay discs were found to be cheaper so we have 'clay pigeons' now, but in France the glass balls survive in the language - painful-sounding 'le ball-trap' means clay pigeon shooting.
